Situation today (26 October 2026)

  • Announced strikes: no new one in the sources checked on 26 October 2026.
  • National strikes in 2026: 24 June (FNV) and 9 September (24 hours, NS and ProRail among others, CNV and FNV), against cuts to WW and WIA.
  • What next: according to CNV the actions continue; according to the press the government reversed part of the cuts, but unions demand all of them be withdrawn.
  • NS pay deal: the 2025 dispute ended with an agreement in August 2025, so a strike over the NS collective agreement is not on the agenda.

What to do on a strike day

  • Getting to Schiphol: the train to Amsterdam Centraal usually takes 15 to 20 minutes; without trains you are left with taxi, Uber and hotel shuttles. Flights are not hit by a train strike.
  • In the city: in a national strike trams, metro and buses (GVB) stop too; Amsterdam is easy to explore on foot or by bike. Details in Getting around Amsterdam.
  • An outing that does not depend on transport: a canal cruise starts in the centre and needs no train.

Rights and preparation

Keep your ticket and contact NS; the conditions for a strike are published case by case on ns.nl. If you have a flight, allow at least two extra hours and consider sleeping the night before in a hotel near Schiphol. The city-wide picture is in Strikes and disruptions in Amsterdam.
