Private tour by Mercedes EQV

The private tour takes your group in a luxury vehicle with an English-speaking guide, with hotel pickup and drop-off and a boat trip on the former Zuiderzee. The listing shows about $485 per person with free cancellation; the duration varies in our notes (6 to 8 h). It is the most expensive offer, but the only one where the schedule adapts to you.

Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken

The day with Edam adds the cheese town to the three classic stops, from €39. Well rated (4.6), it is the best compromise if you want to see the most in one day, but each stop is short. Our Edam page shows what you can do there in an hour.

Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Marken, the safe choice

The classic guided tour is the best seller in the category (21,294 reviews, 4.4) from €37.50. It follows the usual pattern: windmills, demonstrations, Volendam harbour, then Marken, with free time. Its rating is slightly lower than the Edam version.

Volendam and Zaanse Schans with cheese

This guided visit is presented as a group of at most 30 people, with a cheese farm visit and a windmill cruise option. We did not see its price.

Group day trip

Another group excursion covers the same three sites. Price and reviews not recorded: compare it with the offers above. To see everything, also browse From Amsterdam: Zaanse Schans, Volendam & Marken Guided Tour.

What if you go on your own?

Our guide Volendam or Zaanse Schans details the route. In short: bus 800 from the central station (about 24 minutes) to the Zaanse Schans, whose village is free to enter; the Zaanse Schans Ticket costs €29.50 and covers two windmills and the museums. Volendam and Marken are linked by the Marken Express boat (about 30 minutes). Doing it yourself costs less but takes more organising.

What is not included / the pitfalls

  • Entrance fees: a windmill entry, the cheese farm or the clog workshop are often extra; so is lunch.
  • Time on site: a full-day coach tour often leaves little time at each stop.
  • Languages: check the guide's language; some versions are in Spanish or English only.
  • Crowds: the Zaanse Schans is very busy with coaches at midday.
  • Price: "from" prices depend on the date and the number of people.

Which offer should you choose?

  • First visit, one day only: the day with Edam.
  • Budget group traveller: the classic tour at €37.50.
  • Family or group of 4 or more: the private tour, compared with several tickets.
  • Food lovers: the visit with a cheese farm.
  • Half a day and a small budget: go to the Zaanse Schans on your own.

Booking at the best time

Book a few days ahead in high season. Morning departures leave more time on site. For other ideas, see excursions from Amsterdam and the windmills around Amsterdam.
