The Johan Cruijff ArenA is the home ground of Ajax Amsterdam, in the Zuidoost district, a quarter of an hour by metro from the city centre. It opened in 1996 as the Amsterdam ArenA and was renamed in 2018 in honour of Johan Cruijff, who died in 2016. The stadium has more than 55,000 seats and a retractable roof, which is closed for concerts and in very bad weather. It is open for tours every day: the classic self-guided tour takes about 75 minutes and goes through the dressing room, the players' tunnel, the pitchside and the press room. In summer it also hosts the big open-air concerts.
Highlights

The pitch and the stands
Through the players' tunnel you come out at the edge of the pitch, next to the dugouts, facing the red and white stands. Between matches, rigs of lamps placed on the grass light it to make up for the shade of the stands and the roof. During the concert summer the pitch is covered with floor plates and the dugouts are removed: only a guided "off-season" tour is offered then.

The Ajax dressing room
You can sit in a player's seat, under the large club crest on the ceiling. The dressing room is closed on match days and when the team is playing away. The tour also takes in the mixed zone and the press room, and ends at the Ajax Gallery of Fame, where the club's trophies are on display.

The stadium and its roof
The building stands on top of a covered car park built under the stands. Its sliding roof normally stays open, even in the rain; it is closed for concerts or ahead of heavy downpours, to protect the grass. The stadium is fitted with more than 4,200 solar panels.
Seeing an Ajax match
Tickets are sold only through the official Ajax ticket shop, with a verified account: you verify your identity in the Ajax app with an ID document, and you can buy tickets about an hour later. The Club Card (€5 for the 2026-2027 season) gives priority over the general sale; it is compulsory for some matches, such as Ajax v ADO Den Haag (22 November) and Ajax v FC Utrecht (6 December). Tickets appear in the app no later than one week before the match. Tickets bought on resale sites such as Viagogo or StubHub can be blocked: use the official Ajax Resale exchange instead.
