Amsterdam Pipe Museum: opening hours, tickets and tips

Updated on October 15, 2026

Amsterdam Pipe Museum displays pipes and objects relating to their manufacture in a canal house dating from 1670 on Prinsengracht. It is a cultural-history and decorative-arts visit with a personal welcome. Adult admission costs €15 (prices checked in October 2026). No appointment is needed; online booking is available if you prefer to choose a time. The building's stairs make it inaccessible to wheelchairs.

Highlights

The carved pipe

The carved pipe

The photograph shows a meerschaum pipe dated 1890 from the collection. Study the carving and choice of motifs; this object's presence in the cases on your visiting day is not guaranteed.

A canal house

The historic setting contributes to the experience. Look at the room proportions and case arrangement, remembering that access involves steps.

Materials and forms

Explore the pipe as a crafted and decorated object. Ask about materials, techniques and uses rather than simply moving through a series of unusual items.

Personal explanations

The team advertises a welcome with a tour adapted to visitors. Mention your interests at the start: tobacco history, craftsmanship or decoration can offer different ways of understanding the collection.

Practical info

Tips

  • Tickets at the counter are cash-only; online ticketing is also available. Official language versions describe the contribution from tourist-card and Museumkaart holders differently: the official visit page lists free entry with a donation requested, while the English version cites a €2.50 supplement (prices checked in October 2026); confirm before visiting. Anyone needing step-free access should choose another stop. Combine with Leidseplein, the Nine Streets or our canal-belt walk to stay in the same area. The shop is free to enter, but shop access is not admission to the collection.

How to get there

Prinsengracht 488, 1017 KH Amsterdam. Walk from the Leidseplein area and identify the museum entrance within the canal house.

Opening hours

Best: Weekdays from noon
Monday-Saturday 12:00-18:00; Sunday closed. Closed on King's Day
1 January and 25 December; check exceptions.
