The Dutch Resistance Museum (Verzetsmuseum), at Plantage Kerklaan 61, tells the story of life in the Netherlands under German occupation from 1940 to 1945: the choices and dilemmas faced by the population, the persecution of the Jews, collaboration and the many forms of resistance. Founded in 1984 by former resistance members, it draws on authentic objects, documents and testimonies. The museum opens every day from 10am to 5pm; an adult ticket costs €17.50 and includes a free audio tour. The same ticket gives access to the Resistance Museum Junior, the children's section, housed in the same building.
Highlights

The Plancius building
The museum occupies this building from 1876, built on the initiative of the Jewish choral society Oefening Baart Kunst. Its pedimented façade, opposite Artis Zoo, marks the entrance to the Plantage district.

The permanent exhibition
Renewed in December 2022, it shows how the war turned daily life upside down, how the persecution of the Jews unfolded and how people came to resist the occupier, through reconstructed streets and interiors, posters and objects from the period.
The former colonies
Since October 2024, a section has covered the Second World War in the former Dutch colonies: the Dutch East Indies, Suriname and the Caribbean. It shows how the war strengthened the call for independence.
The Resistance Museum Junior
Aimed at children aged 9 and over, it follows four eyewitnesses who were between 9 and 14 years old during the war: Eva, Henk, Jan and Nelly. Each one tells the story of a theme: persecution, resistance, collaboration and adapting to everyday life.

Tips
Tickets can be bought online or at the museum entrance. On weekdays the museum often hosts school groups: weekends and school holidays are quieter for visiting the Junior section. Allow about two hours for both routes. As a family, compare the €40 family ticket with the total of individual tickets (prices checked in October 2026).
