September in Amsterdam: what to expect

According to the 1991-2020 KNMI normals, measured at Schiphol, September afternoons average 19 °C and nights drop to around 11 °C. The month gets 84 mm of rain on average and about 154 hours of sun, well below summer. The first cool, windy days arrive at the end of the month: plan layers and a waterproof.

The days shorten quickly: on 1 September 2027 the sun rises around 6:50 am and sets around 8:30 pm; on 30 September it rises around 7:40 am and sets around 7:25 pm.

Crowds and prices. The summer holidays in the Northern region end on 22 August 2027: attendance drops clearly after the school return, although weekends and the big museums stay busy. To compare with other seasons, see our guide to the best time to visit Amsterdam. Hotel rates vary with dates and events: compare several days before booking.

September highlights

Open Monumentendag, 11 and 12 September 2027

The Waterlooplein flea market on a sunny autumn day

Open Monumentendag, the European heritage day, opens historic Amsterdam buildings to the public for free, ones that are usually closed or paid, on the second weekend of September. In 2027 it takes place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 September, from 10 am to 5 pm; in 2026 it is on 12 and 13 September. The list of participating sites is published before the event on the official site and on I amsterdam: pick a few in the same district, as queues can be long at the best-known ones. For houses open all year, see our canal houses to visit.

Amsterdam Fringe Festival and the Dutch Theatre Festival

At the start of the month, two festivals bring halls and unusual venues to life: the Amsterdam Fringe Festival, a mix of theatre, performance and dance from new talent across about twenty venues, and the Dutch Theatre Festival (Nederlands Theater Festival), a showcase of the theatre season. Both take place from 3 to 13 September in 2026; the 2027 dates had not been published in October 2026, but the festival is held every year in early September. Many Fringe shows are in English or wordless. See also our concerts and shows in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam City Swim

This charity swimming race, in aid of ALS research, is swum in the city's canals. 2026 edition: 6 September. Check the 2027 dates; as a spectator, watch from the quays.

Dam tot Damloop

This 16 km road race links Amsterdam to Zaandam, passing through the IJ tunnel. 2026 edition: 19 and 20 September. Expect traffic disruption in the centre during the race.

Enjoying the shoulder season

The pond in the Vondelpark, surrounded by trees

When the sun returns, the parks and gardens of Amsterdam are quieter than in summer. The Vondelpark keeps its Openluchttheater until September. The Hortus Botanicus and the Amsterdamse Bos are pleasant under the first autumn colours. The official swimming spots stay open depending on the site: Strand IJburg is supervised until 30 September.

For a day trip, September suits the windmills around Amsterdam and Utrecht. When the rain sets in, our selection what to do in Amsterdam when it rains takes over.
