Dom Tower in Utrecht: climbing the tower (465 steps), tickets and guided tour
The Domtoren, on Utrecht's Domplein, is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands: 112 metres, built between 1321 and 1382 next to the former St Martin's cathedral. You can only climb it on a guided tour, up 465 steps to a platform at about 95 metres, from where you see the whole city, its canals and, on a clear day, a large part of the province. An adult ticket costs €13.50; the tour starts from the Winkel van Utrecht (tourist office), Domplein 9. Utrecht is half an hour by train from Amsterdam, so the trip is easy in a day, with a stroll along the wharves below the Oudegracht, which has two levels.
Highlights

The tower seen from the canal
From the Oudegracht, the tower's silhouette rises above the medieval houses. The low wharves at water level hold terraces and restaurants set in former merchants' cellars.

The view from the top
At the top, the tour explains the history of the tower, its bells and the city; a carillon is installed in the upper part. You stay a few minutes to look at the rooftops, the canal network and the surrounding countryside.
Combination tickets
The “Domplein” ticket combines the tower with DOMunder (the Roman and medieval remains beneath the square) and the Paleis Lofen, for €23.50. A combined ticket with the Museum Speelklok (€20 adult, €11.50 child) can only be bought at the ticket desks.
