Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum Amsterdam: tickets, opening hours and visit
The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum is at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 148, about five minutes' walk from Dam Square, beside a canal in the Red Light District. Founded in 1987 by the entrepreneur Ben Dronkers, it tells how cannabis, "the world's most versatile plant", has served medicine, art, music, textiles and exploration. Its collection holds more than 9,000 objects, live plants and an interactive exhibition on vaporizers. It is a museum, not a coffee shop (for the rules on consumption, see coffee shops in Amsterdam).
Highlights

The historic collection
The route brings together objects from many cultures and periods, from hemp textiles and ropes to medical instruments, along with posters, photographs and live plants. The audio guide, included with your ticket, comes in eight languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Cannabis Japonica
The current temporary exhibition is "Cannabis Japonica: Shinto & the Spirit of 麻", which explores the place of hemp in Japanese culture, notably in Shinto rituals. Check the official website to see whether it is still on at the date of your visit.

The Hemp Gallery and the canal
A second site, the Hemp Gallery, opened in 2009 and presents the practical and industrial uses of hemp. Both sites are wheelchair accessible. The museum stands on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal, a canal that is very busy in the evening: read our guide to the Red Light District rules.
