Joods Museum Amsterdam: the Jewish Museum, tickets and opening hours

Updated on October 8, 2026

The Joods Museum (Jewish Museum), at Nieuwe Amstelstraat 1, tells four centuries of Jewish life in the Netherlands inside four linked former Ashkenazi synagogues in the heart of the old Jewish quarter. It is open every day from 11am to 5pm and is part of the Jewish Cultural Quarter, along with the Portuguese Synagogue, the National Holocaust Museum and the Hollandsche Schouwburg. The Joods Museum and Portuguese Synagogue duo ticket costs €20; the combined ticket for all four sites costs €30 (adult prices, online, October 2026). The museum moved into the Waterlooplein area in 1987, into a group of synagogues built in the 17th and 18th centuries and closed after the war. It is a ten-minute walk from the Rembrandt House and very close to the Magere Brug. To place all the sites, read the page on the Jewish Cultural Quarter.

Highlights

The four synagogues under one roof

The four synagogues under one roof

The museum occupies the Great Synagogue of 1671, the New Synagogue of 1752 and two other Ashkenazi buildings, now linked by glass walkways. The visit lets you see the former places of worship, whose architecture has been preserved.

The permanent exhibition

It presents Jewish religion, history and culture in the Netherlands, from the first communities to the early 21st century. The Rintel Hanukkah menorah, a silver candelabrum over a metre tall given in 1753, is displayed where it stood for more than two centuries.

The neighbouring Portuguese Synagogue

A short walk away, across Mr. Visserplein, the synagogue inaugurated in 1675 has kept its interior almost intact, lit by candles. It is included in the duo ticket and the combined ticket.

The Joods Museum Junior

For ages 6 to 12, an interactive space set in the former home of the Hollander family lets children bake challah, write in Hebrew and discover many ways of living Judaism.

Temporary exhibitions

The museum stages several a year, including "Abracadabra" at the time of our checks. Look at the programme before you come.

Practical info

Tips

Buy tickets online: they cost €2 more at the desk. The combined ticket stays valid for a week, so you can spread the four sites over two days. Allow two hours for the museum and the junior space if you come with children. Before coming on a Friday or during a Jewish holiday, check the hours, as some sites in the quarter remain places of worship (prices seen in October 2026).
