De Poezenboot: Amsterdam's floating cat shelter

Updated on October 8, 2026

The Poezenboot is a floating shelter for stray cats, moored on the Singel at number 38 G. Founded in 1968 by Henriette van Weelde, it takes in abandoned cats and cats found on the street, who live there until they are adopted. The boat is open to visitors three afternoons a week, from 1 pm to 3 pm. Entry is free: donations pay for food and care. Allow 15 to 30 minutes.

Highlights

The houseboat is moored at the canal's edge, between the station and Dam Square. From outside you can already see cats near the windows.

Inside

Inside

On board, the cats move about freely. Visitors may stroke them, as long as they let the cats come to them.

Donations

Entry is free, but the shelter lives mostly on donations, which pay for food, veterinary care and the animals' comfort.

Capacity

Only a small number of people (about six) go aboard at a time so as not to stress the cats: at busy times you have to wait on the quay.

Tips

Visiting hours are short and may change: check them before you come. Do not feed the cats, do not wake sleeping ones, and take photos without flash. If you like cats, the Kattenkabinet, a museum devoted to the cat, is about ten minutes away on foot.

How to get there

Singel 38 G, 1015 AB Amsterdam. About 15 minutes' walk from Amsterdam Centraal station and 8 to 10 minutes from the Anne Frank House.
