June: the open-air season begins

Early summer is all about the parks. In the Vondelpark, the Openluchttheater puts on free shows almost every weekend from May to September: dance on Friday evenings, children's theatre on Saturday afternoons, comedy on Saturday evenings, classical music on Sunday mornings and pop on Sunday afternoons. Entry is free; a voluntary contribution funds the programme. Arrive half an hour early to get a seat on the terraced benches.

Amsterdam Open Air has brought together electronic music, fashion and art collectives for more than ten years at the Gaasperpark, in the south-east of the city, every year on the first weekend of June. Tickets are sold only online, through the official shop.

Just before summer, on Ascension weekend, the Weekend van de Rollende Keukens turns the Westerpark into an open-air restaurant, with dozens of food trucks and live music. Entry is free and you only pay for what you eat; the 2026 edition took place from 13 to 17 May.

July: Keti Koti, theatre and big festivals

On 1 July, Keti Koti ("the chains are broken" in Sranan Tongo) commemorates the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean, on 1 July 1863. In 2026, the day unfolded in three parts: the Bigi Spikri procession, in traditional dress, setting off from the Waterlooplein towards the Oosterpark; the national commemoration at the National Slavery Monument, in the same park; then the free Keti Koti Festival on the Museumplein until the evening. In 2027, 1 July falls on a Thursday; the detailed programme is published in spring.

At the end of the month, two events move into the parks:

  • De Parade, a travelling theatre festival, pitches its striped tents in the Martin Luther Kingpark, on the banks of the Amstel. You can take in one short show after another, from theatre and comedy to music and circus, between fairground rides and food stalls. 2026 edition: 24 July to 9 August.
  • Milkshake, an inclusive, queer electronic music festival, takes over the Westerpark with several stages, drag shows and performances. 2026 edition: 25 and 26 July; the 2027 dates have not yet been announced.

Dekmantel rounds off the month. This electronic and experimental music festival runs over five days: concerts in venues in the centre early in the week, then three days of open-air stages in the Amsterdamse Bos, plus club nights. The 2026 edition took place from 29 July to 2 August. The minimum age is 18, tickets (day tickets or multi-day passes) are sold only through the official ticket shop, and paid shuttles leave from Amsterdam Amstel station; by bike, allow about 45 minutes from Central Station.

August: Pride, music on the canals and open-air cinema

August brings the summer's most popular events.

Pride Amsterdam (31 July - 8 August 2027)

After Amsterdam hosted WorldPride in 2026, Pride returns to its usual format: from Saturday 31 July to Sunday 8 August 2027. On the first Saturday, the Pride Walk crosses the centre and ends at the Pride Park set up in the Vondelpark. The highlight remains the Canal Parade on Saturday 7 August 2027, which you can watch for free from the quays. For the route, times and tips on finding a good spot, see our Amsterdam Pride page.

Grachtenfestival (13 - 22 August 2027)

The Grachtenfestival is the leading classical music and jazz festival in the Netherlands. For ten days, young musicians under 35 play all over the city: free concerts on squares, pontoons and in parks, and ticketed concerts in halls, gardens and houses along the canal ring. For concerts in private houses, gardens or terraces, the address stays secret when you buy and arrives by email on the morning of the concert. Ticket sales open in June; there is no dress code, but latecomers are not admitted once the concert has started.

Prinsengrachtconcert

Organised separately from the Grachtenfestival, this classical concert is held every August on a pontoon moored in front of the Pulitzer hotel (Prinsengracht 323). It is free and can be followed from the quays and bridges. The 2026 edition, the 44th, took place on Saturday 22 August at 8 pm, preceded by a children's concert at 3 pm. Come early, bring a picnic (fires and barbecues are banned) and take your rubbish home with you.

Pluk de Nacht

This open-air film festival sets up on the Stenen Hoofd, a former pier on the IJ, west of Central Station. It screens fiction films, documentaries and short films not yet released in Dutch cinemas. The site opens in the early evening and films start at nightfall, around 9 pm. A ticket (€11 in 2026) gets you a deckchair in front of the screen; without a ticket, you can watch from the terrace or bring your own seat. The bar is card only. 2026 edition: 19 to 29 August.

Theatre in the forest: the Bostheater

The entrance to the Amsterdamse Bostheater on a summer evening

In the heart of the Amsterdamse Bos, the Amsterdamse Bostheater is an open-air theatre that runs from May to September: plays, children's shows, film screenings and paid concerts in the Live at Amsterdamse Bos series. Its theatre festival, Bosfest, returns for a fourth edition from 17 to 28 August 2027, Tuesday to Saturday evenings, with small audiences, a bar and a campfire at the heart of the site. Bring a jacket: it cools down quickly under the trees after sunset.

Outdoor swimming

The Gaasperplas, a swimming lake in south-east Amsterdam

Amsterdam has several official swimming spots where water quality is monitored during the season. Before you go, check the Zwemwater website or app, which flags warnings (blue-green algae, pollution after a storm).

Spot Area What to know
Marineterrein Binnenhaven Centre, east of the station Official swimming spot since 2025, no lifeguards; water quality and temperature displayed on site
Strand IJburg IJburg (east) Sandy beach on the IJmeer, lifeguarded from 1 May to 30 September; toilets, volleyball, paddleboard hire
Nieuwe Meer Edge of the Amsterdamse Bos Swimming pontoon, marked shallow areas for children, naturist beach
Gaasperplas Zuidoost South beach with marked swimming areas, children's water play area to the north
Sloterplas Nieuw-West Sandy beach to the north-west, marked shallow area for children

Information checked in October 2026 on the I amsterdam and Waternet websites; access to these spots is free.

What about the canals? The canals and the Amstel are not official swimming waters. Waternet, the water authority, points out that swimmers are hard for boats to see, and that after heavy rain sewage can overflow into them: wait three days before any open-water swim. For a swim in the city, the Marineterrein is the option closest to the centre.

Terraces, picnics and boating

Picnics: the large lawns of the Vondelpark, the Westerpark, the Oosterpark and Frankendael Park fill up as soon as the sun comes out. Take your rubbish with you and check each park's rules: barbecues, for example, are banned in the Vondelpark.

Waterside terraces: north of the IJ, the quays of NDSM, fifteen minutes by free ferry (line F4) from behind Central Station, have terraces facing the sunset, and Pllek also hosts open-air screenings there. In town, the terraces on the canal quays are the most sought-after in the late afternoon.

Boating: renting a small electric boat is one of the most popular summer outings. Municipal rules apply to renters too: a speed limit of 6 km/h on most canals, a maximum of 12 passengers plus the skipper, keep to the right, and a zero-emission engine is compulsory in the centre. Avoid the canals on the Canal Parade route on Pride Saturday, when boat traffic is restricted.

Events you no longer need to look for

Some events still mentioned in guidebooks have changed or disappeared:

  • Uitmarkt: the big weekend that opened the cultural season, in late August in Amsterdam, has given way to DE OPENING, held in Eindhoven in 2026.
  • Over het IJ Festival: the NDSM theatre festival has been wound up; its organisation is becoming an advisory platform for site-specific theatre.
  • Kwaku Summer Festival: the festival in the Nelson Mandelapark held what is for now its last edition in 2026, and its return in 2027 is not confirmed.

Practical tips for summer

  • Book early: Pride week and the Dekmantel weekend are among the most expensive times of the year for accommodation.
  • Be ready for rain: July and August are wetter than spring; keep a waterproof layer handy, even for a festival.
  • Buy tickets on official websites: resellers often charge far higher prices, and a ticket bought from a private individual may be fake.
