Noordermarkt: Saturday organic market and Monday flea market in the Jordaan

Updated on October 2, 2026

The Noordermarkt is the square surrounding the Noorderkerk, in the north of the Jordaan, on the Prinsengracht. It hosts two very different markets: on Saturdays, from 9am to 4pm, a farmers' and organic produce market (boerenmarkt); on Monday mornings, a flea market of clothes, books and antiques, which continues into the Westerstraat fabric market. Entry is free. It is one of the locals' favourite markets, a 15-minute walk from Central Station.

Highlights

The Noorderkerk and the Prinsengracht

The stalls are set up around the Noorderkerk, the church built from 1620 to 1623 to a design by Hendrick de Keyser. From the bridges over the Prinsengracht, you can see the bell tower, the market awnings and the moored houseboats all at once. The church is open free of charge on Mondays and Saturdays from 10:30am to 12:30pm, from September to May.

The Saturday organic market

The Saturday organic market

Since 1987, Saturday has been boerenmarkt day: seasonal fruit and vegetables, bread, cheese and flowers, alongside second-hand and craft stalls. Locals do their weekly shopping here, then linger on the café terraces around the square.

The Monday flea market and the Westerstraat

On Mondays, the Noordermarkt becomes a flea market: vintage clothes, books, records, crockery and antiques. Right next door, the Westerstraat market (9am to 1pm) lines up its stalls of fabric by the metre, clothes and haberdashery, hence its nickname "Lapjesmarkt", the rag market.

The apple pie at Winkel 43

On the corner of the square, at number 43, the Winkel 43 café serves a tall cinnamon apple pie with whipped cream. On market days the queue grows long: come early or get a slice to take away.

The history of the square

Laid out in 1616 under the name Prinsenmarkt, the square took its current name after the Noorderkerk was completed in 1623. Until 1655 it was largely taken up by the church's graveyard. The monument to the Jordaan uprising (Jordaanoproer), a workers' riot in 1934, and plaques commemorating the February Strike of 1941 recall the neighbourhood's working-class and resistance past.

The Lindengracht next door

On Saturdays, the Lindenmarkt fills the nearby Lindengracht from 9am to 5pm: a large neighbourhood market (fruit and vegetables, fish, cheese, flowers). Together with the Noordermarkt, it makes for the liveliest morning in the Jordaan.

Tips

On Saturdays, arrive before 11am: the aisles are narrow and the crowds build quickly towards noon. On Mondays, the best second-hand finds go early; most traders pack up in the early afternoon. Bring cash and a reusable bag; some producers take cards, but not all. Entry is free; prices depend on each trader (prices checked in October 2026).

How to get there

Noordermarkt, 1015 NA Amsterdam (Jordaan). From Central Station (Amsterdam Centraal), allow about 15 minutes on foot heading west along the Haarlemmerstraat, then along the Brouwersgracht and the Prinsengracht.
