Films and series shot in Amsterdam: filming locations to visit
Amsterdam has long been a film set: its canals, narrow houses and white bridges are the backdrop to comedies, spy films and romances. This guide lists the best-established filming locations, the films or series linked to them, and how to combine them in a walk. The sources consulted (tourist offices, filming-location sites) do not always agree on details; we keep only what several of them confirm, and say so where doubt remains. Information as of October 2026. ## The films to remember | Film or series | Year | Where in Amsterdam | |---|---|---| | Diamonds Are Forever (James Bond) | 1971 | The Amstel and the Magere Brug | | Ocean's Twelve | 2004 | Hotel Pulitzer on the Prinsengracht, De Dampkring coffee shop, the Nine Streets district | | The Fault in Our Stars | 2014 | Vondelpark, Leidsegracht, Anne Frank House | ## Diamonds Are Forever: the Magere Brug In this 1971 James Bond film (Sean Connery), Amsterdam is part of the film's route, with the Amstel and the famous Magere Brug, the white wooden drawbridge across the river. The walk is easy: the bridge is one of the most photographed in the city, especially in the evening when it is lit. ## Ocean's Twelve: Hotel Pulitzer and the Nine Streets Ocean's Twelve (2004), with George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, sets part of its plot in Amsterdam. The places linked to the shoot are the Pulitzer hotel on the Prinsengracht, whose Jansz restaurant entrance serves as an exterior, the De Dampkring coffee shop (in the historic centre) and the Nine Streets district. Some sources also mention the Rijksmuseum; we could not confirm it for the shoot, but the Rijksmuseum is worth visiting anyway. For the rules to follow in a coffee shop, read coffee shops in Amsterdam. ## The Fault in Our Stars: Vondelpark, Leidsegracht and the Anne Frank House The film The Fault in Our Stars (2014), based on John Green's novel, introduced Amsterdam to a teenage audience. The places named are the Vondelpark, for the picnic and walking scenes, a corner of the Leidsegracht (at no. 4, at the crossing with the Herengracht) and the Anne Frank House, which plays a part in the story. To visit the house, book a long time ahead: our guide to booking tickets in Amsterdam explains how. ## Other films set in Amsterdam Several films are set in Amsterdam or have scenes there: Turks Fruit (1973) by Paul Verhoeven, Amsterdamned (1988), a Dick Maas thriller in which the killer hides in the canals, Black Book (2006) and Kidnapping Mr. Heineken (2015). The American films EuroTrip (2004) and The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017) also have scenes in the city, but sources disagree on the exact streets: do not expect to find a set exactly as it appears. For places of remembrance, see our guide to the Second World War in Amsterdam. ## A walk to find the sets 1. Start at the Vondelpark, in the morning. 2. Head towards the Leidseplein and then the Herengracht and Prinsengracht canals. 3. Cross the Nine Streets district, then finish at the Magere Brug, preferably at nightfall. To see the canals from another angle, see a canal cruise and the Amsterdam canals. ## To watch films in Amsterdam To extend the experience, our guide to cinemas in Amsterdam presents the Tuschinski and the Eye Filmmuseum.
