The sights to book before you leave
Three sights call for planning ahead: the Anne Frank House, whose tickets often sell out within hours, the Van Gogh Museum, which sells no tickets at the door, and the Rijksmuseum, where every visitor must choose an entry time. Other places require a time slot but sell out less often, and the Keukenhof joins the list in spring.
Book the Anne Frank House first, since its release date is fixed, then build the rest of your plans around that slot. To choose your museums before booking, see our pick of the best museums in Amsterdam.
Anne Frank House: the hardest booking
How tickets are released
Tickets are sold only on the Anne Frank House's official website, never at the museum entrance. Every Tuesday at 10am, Amsterdam time, sales open for visits six weeks later. Log on at 10am sharp on the Tuesday falling six weeks before your visit: in high season and during school holidays, the most popular slots go fast.
An adult ticket costs €16.50, €7 for ages 10 to 17 and €1 for children up to 9, including a €1 booking fee. Museumkaart holders pay €1. The I amsterdam City Card and student cards give no discount. The museum recommends the visit for ages 10 and up.
Cancellations, changes and resale
Tickets can be neither exchanged nor refunded, even in the event of a strike, transport problems or personal circumstances. They are non-transferable and valid only for the date and time chosen. Nor can you add a ticket to an existing order: buy tickets for the whole group in one go.
Resale is prohibited without the museum's consent, and the museum may refuse entry to a visitor whose ticket was not bought from it or from an authorised partner. The museum also warns of fraudulent sites, with web addresses close to its own, that sell invalid tickets or harvest credit card numbers. The "Anne Frank tours" offered by commercial agencies do not include entry to the museum: they are walks outside.
If everything is sold out
There is no waiting list and no last-minute sale at the door. Keep checking the official ticket shop over the following days, and consider evening slots, up to 10pm, if the daytime ones are taken. Failing that, the Resistance Museum and the Jewish Cultural Quarter also tell the story of the occupation. All the practical information on the visit is in our Anne Frank House page.
Van Gogh Museum: online only

The Van Gogh Museum sells no tickets on site. Every visitor, including Museumkaart holders, must book a timed-entry ticket online, through the museum's ticket shop or one of its official resellers: Tours&Tickets, GetYourGuide, Tiqets, Musement and Klook. An adult ticket costs €25, €16 for students enrolled at an institution in the European Union or the EEA, and entry is free for under-18s and Museumkaart holders, who must still book their slot.
The I amsterdam City Card has not been accepted since June 2022: if you have bought this card, budget for a paid ticket. Tickets are non-refundable and valid only for the date and time chosen. You cannot enter before your time, but you have half an hour's leeway afterwards.
The museum warns of fake tickets sold on platforms that are not among its resellers. On Fridays the museum stays open until 9pm, a good option when the daytime slots are taken. Details in our Van Gogh Museum page.
Rijksmuseum: a time slot for everyone
At the Rijksmuseum, every visitor books an entry time, including Museumkaart holders; only Friends of the museum are exempt. An adult ticket costs €25. Entry is free up to and including age 18 and with the I amsterdam City Card, but these free tickets must also be booked.
Paid tickets are non-refundable. You can, however, change the date or time of your visit free of charge via the museum's contact form, quoting your order number; the museum advises doing so two to five working days before the planned date to get a reply in time. Once inside, you can stay as long as you like until closing at 5pm, but you cannot leave and come back. See our Rijksmuseum page.
Other timed-entry sights
Rembrandt House Museum and Amsterdam in Motion
The Rembrandt House Museum sells dated tickets, valid for the time chosen. Museumkaart and I amsterdam City Card holders, who get in free, must also book. An adult ticket costs €23.50, or €19.50 from 4pm.
The Amsterdam Museum has closed its Kalverstraat home for renovation until 2030; its Amsterdam in Motion exhibition, at the Westergas cultural park, requires a time slot for everyone, museum cards included. Adults €18, free up to age 17 and with the Museumkaart or City Card.
Heineken Experience
Each ticket corresponds to an entry slot, and tickets sold on site are limited: book online, ideally for a weekday morning, Saturday being the busiest day. The Heineken Tour costs €24.95, or €29.95 with the rooftop terrace. A plus: a ticket can be rescheduled up to one hour before the visit via the ticket shop's online service. Entry is for over-18s only, even if accompanied: bring ID. More details in our Heineken Experience page.
A'DAM Lookout

There is no need to book far ahead for the observation deck of the A'DAM Tower, but do buy online: an adult ticket costs €16.50 instead of €18.50 at the desk, and the "Over the Edge" swing €7.50 instead of €8.50. Entry is included in the I amsterdam City Card.
Moco Museum
Moco uses variable pricing depending on the day and time, from €19.95 for an adult, and advertises savings of up to 20% when booking online. The Museumkaart gives a 30% discount, not free entry. Entry is guaranteed if you arrive at the start of your slot, with 20 minutes' grace.
Canal cruises
Classic one-hour cruises are easy to book, often on the day; online, the price is generally lower than at the desk, from €13.50 with Stromma. With the I amsterdam City Card, one cruise is included and needs no booking: it can be used any day between 10am and 6pm.
Royal Palace
The Royal Palace, on Dam Square, sells tickets online or at the ticket desk (adults €13.50, free with the Museumkaart). Tickets bought online are non-refundable, yet the palace closes on certain days for royal receptions: check its official calendar the day before buying.
Keukenhof: book as soon as sales open

The flower park in Lisse only opens in spring, from 18 March to 9 May in 2027. Tickets go on sale from 15 October 2026, only for a fixed date and arrival time. The official website lists adult tickets from €21 online, compared with €27 at the gate, with prices varying by day. For an April weekend, book as soon as your dates are set. The park warns against fake ticketing sites and points out that it has only one official website. Transport and tips in our Keukenhof page.

Museumkaart and City Card: a card does not replace a time slot
At the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Rembrandt House Museum and Amsterdam in Motion, you must book a slot even with the Museumkaart. Do it at the same time as your other bookings: a free slot can sell out just like a paid ticket.
The Museumkaart costs €75 for an adult in 2026. Bought at a museum by a foreign visitor, it is issued as a temporary card, valid for 31 days and for a maximum of 5 visits. The I amsterdam City Card includes, depending on the option chosen, GVB public transport, plus a canal cruise and entry to more than 70 museums and attractions. Some places require a time slot, booked with the card's code; this booking does not activate the card, which is refundable only as long as it has not been activated. It covers neither the Van Gogh Museum nor the Anne Frank House. To decide which to choose, read our comparison City Card or Museumkaart.
Avoiding resellers and fake sites
- Start from the museum's official website, typing its name yourself rather than clicking on a sponsored ad: ads at the top of search results can lead to unofficial resellers.
- For Anne Frank, no exceptions: the museum sells tickets only on its own website, and a ticket bought elsewhere may be refused at the entrance.
- For Van Gogh, only the museum's ticket shop and its five official resellers are safe.
- Pay by credit card and keep the confirmation email. For the city's other pitfalls, see our guide to scams in Amsterdam.
On the day: arrive on time
Turn up at your slot time, with your ticket ready on your phone. At the Van Gogh Museum, you cannot enter early, but up to half an hour late is tolerated; at Moco, the leeway is 20 minutes. At the Anne Frank House, a missed ticket is neither exchanged nor refunded, so allow plenty of time. During the roadworks on the Rozengracht, allow ten minutes' walk from the Dam tram stop.
Think about bags too: the Anne Frank House only admits bags smaller than an A4 sheet, and neither the Van Gogh Museum nor the Heineken Experience accepts suitcases. The Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House accept card payments only.
