EYE Filmmuseum Amsterdam: exhibitions, cinemas, hours and tickets

Updated on October 1, 2026

The EYE Filmmuseum, IJpromenade 1 (1031 KT Amsterdam), is the Dutch museum of cinema, housed in a sharp-angled white building on the north bank of the IJ, less than 5 minutes by free ferry from Central Station. It combines a permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions, four cinemas and a waterside bar-restaurant. The exhibitions are open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00; a ticket costs €16.50, and entry is free for under-18s and with the Museumkaart. Designed by the Vienna practice Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, the building opened in April 2012. The museum holds the national film collections, including more than 64,000 posters.

Highlights

The building

The building

Set on the Overhoeks quay, facing the historic centre, the EYE draws a white, angular silhouette that changes with every viewpoint. Its glazed foyer and bar-restaurant open wide onto the IJ, and the waterside terrace is one of the good spots to watch the boats go by.

Seen from the south bank, the EYE and the neighbouring tower of [A'DAM Lookout](/fr/attractions/a-dam-lookout) form the new face of Amsterdam-Noord. The two are easy to visit on the same day, a few steps from each other.

The permanent exhibition "What is Film?"

On the lower level and throughout the building: a green screen to put yourself into a film scene, mini screening booths, a tool that finds film clips by colour or movement, cinema devices from the collection, animation tables where you can make a flip book, an animation gallery and a poster gallery. It is open to anyone with a film or exhibition ticket, and free for under-18s.

Temporary exhibitions

In October 2026, the EYE is showing "Ulrich Seidl – Über das Leben, die Liebe und den Tod", devoted to the Austrian filmmaker and photographer, from 19 September 2026 to 31 January 2027. Between two exhibitions, the galleries close while the next one is installed.

The cinemas

Four screens show restored classics, art-house films, documentaries and retrospectives every day. A screening costs €13.50, reduced price €12, children up to 11 €8; a €2.50 supplement applies to films over 150 minutes.

Opening hours and tickets

Exhibitions Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00, and on Mondays during school holidays; box office and screenings Monday 18:00 to 22:00, Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday 10:00 to 22:00, Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 23:00. Tips

With the Museumkaart, the exhibitions are free. A cinema ticket also gives access to the permanent exhibition: arrive a little before the screening to make the most of it. In bad weather, the EYE is a safe bet, like other places in our guide [what to do in Amsterdam when it rains](/fr/articles/que-faire-a-amsterdam-quand-il-pleut). Prices checked in October 2026.
