Where to stay in Amsterdam at a glance

How this selection was made

The 15 hotels below exist and are taking guests in 2026. We chose them for their location (within walking distance of the centre or a few minutes from a tram line, metro station or the ferry), their category and their price positioning. This is not an objective ranking or a tested review by Amsterdam Authority: prices are indicative rates, excluding tourist tax, and they vary widely with dates, day of the week and availability. Always check the current rate on the hotel's own site or a booking platform. To compare areas before you choose, see our guide Where to stay in Amsterdam.

Tips for paying less

  • Choose your dates: January and February are generally the cheapest months; prices climb for King's Day, tulip season, Pride and the Amsterdam Dance Event. See the best time to visit Amsterdam.
  • Aim for Oost or Noord rather than the very centre: metro 51, 53 or 54 and the free ferry put the centre ten minutes away. Our guide Where to stay in Amsterdam on a budget covers the areas.
  • Allow for the tourist tax: 12.5% of the nightly price, excluding VAT, on top of 21% hotel VAT since 1 January 2026; see the Amsterdam tourist tax. On a €100 room excluding VAT, the tax adds €12.50 a night.
  • Read what is included: breakfast, towels, lockers and parking are charged separately in most hostels and chain hotels.
  • Beware of listings that are too central and too cheap: compare the exact address on a map before paying.

The best hotels in Amsterdam: quick picks by traveller profile

For the short answer to "best hotels in Amsterdam", here are the choices drawn from the tables above (our selection, not a tested ranking):

  • First visit: Hotel V Nesplein (from about €160), in the heart of the centre. Our guide Where to stay in Amsterdam for a first visit compares the areas.
  • Couple: Pulitzer Amsterdam (from about €350) or Hotel Estheréa (from about €190), on the canals. See also Amsterdam for couples.
  • Family: Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark for its private rooms next to the park, or Motel One Amsterdam-Waterlooplein for its family rooms (20 m²). See Where to stay in Amsterdam with family.
  • Tight budget: Generator Amsterdam, beds from about €15, or Volkshotel, rooms from about €65.
  • Best value: Motel One Amsterdam-Waterlooplein, from €99.
  • Arriving by train: citizenM Amsterdam South or Mövenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre.
  • For a treat: Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, from about €750, or Conservatorium Hotel, from about €500.

Common mistakes: choosing a hotel "in Amsterdam" that turns out to be 4 km from the centre; underestimating the very steep stairs of canal houses, often without a lift; and forgetting that the 12.5% tourist tax and breakfast are not always in the displayed price. From the airport, the train takes about fifteen minutes to Central Station: see Schiphol to central Amsterdam.
