What weighs on the bill

Amsterdam's tourist tax is 12.5% of the room price, excluding VAT, and is added to VAT on accommodation, which rose from 9% to 21% on 1 January 2026. Some platforms show a price without this tax: always compare the total amount. Dates matter as much as the neighbourhood: weekends, King's Day, the tulip season, Amsterdam Pride and major events push prices up.
Neighbourhoods to search
- Amsterdam-Noord: across the IJ, with newer hotels and hostels around Overhoeks and NDSM. The free GVB ferry leaves from behind Central Station and puts the centre a few minutes away.
- Oost and Plantage: green, calm and more local. The old town is a 20 to 30 minute walk, or a tram or metro ride.
- De Pijp: lively, with affordable restaurants around the Albert Cuyp; some small places remain more accessible than in the canal belt.
- Sloterdijk and the Zuidas: chain hotels whose rates vary a lot; they can drop at weekends when business travellers are away. Compare with the centre for your exact dates.
- Neighbouring cities: Haarlem or Utrecht, linked by train, can offer cheaper rooms at the cost of a daily commute. See Haarlem from Amsterdam and Utrecht from Amsterdam.
Hostels
Amsterdam has many hostels with dorms and private rooms. Big chains such as Stayokay, Clink and Generator have locations in the city; check their official websites for current addresses and conditions. A few tips:
- Read recent reviews on noise, cleanliness and lockers.
- Check whether breakfast and bed linen are included.
- Be wary of hostels very close to the Red Light District if you want to sleep.
Tips to cut the cost
- Travel off-season: November, January and February are generally cheaper than spring and summer. See Amsterdam in winter.
- Avoid weekends when you can: a stay from Sunday to Thursday often costs less.
- Book early with free cancellation, then watch prices.
- Choose a room without breakfast: a bakery or café costs less than a hotel buffet.
- Use public transport rather than an expensive hotel in the centre: a place twenty minutes away by tram is often more affordable.
Saving on the rest of the trip
Cheaper accommodation leaves budget for the rest: see our free activities in Amsterdam, our addresses for eating in Amsterdam and the Amsterdam travel budget. Museum passes can also save money if you visit several museums.
Traps to avoid
- Listings that are too cheap for a "central" address: check the exact address on a map.
- Hidden fees: tourist tax, cleaning, luggage storage. Our guide on scams and safety in Amsterdam offers more pointers.
- Unregistered tourist rentals: the city strictly regulates short-term lets; check that the accommodation is legal.
