July in Amsterdam: what to expect
According to the 1991-2020 normals from the Dutch weather institute (KNMI), measured at Schiphol, July afternoons average 23 °C and nights drop to around 14 °C. The month gets an average of 82 mm of rain and about 225 hours of sun. These are averages: the weather changes fast and a shower can follow a sunny morning. Always carry a light waterproof jacket, even in fine weather.
The days are long: in early July 2027 the sun rises around 5:20 am and sets around 10 pm; at the end of July it sets around 9:35 pm. You can enjoy the quays and parks well after dinner.
Crowds and prices. The summer holidays in the Northern region, which includes Amsterdam, start on 10 July 2027 and run until 22 August. The best-known museums are very busy: book time slots in advance for the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum. The weekend Pride opens (31 July 2027) and the Dekmantel weekend are among the most expensive of the year for accommodation. Our guide to the best time to visit Amsterdam compares the seasons.
July 2027 highlights
Keti Koti, 1 July
Keti Koti ("broken chains" in Sranan) marks the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles on 1 July 1863. In 2026 the day unfolded in three parts: a procession in traditional dress from the Waterlooplein towards the Oosterpark, the national commemoration at the national slavery monument in that park, then a free festival on the Museumplein. In 2027, 1 July falls on a Thursday; the detailed programme is published in spring.
Free theatre in the Vondelpark

From May to September, the Openluchttheater in the Vondelpark stages free shows almost every weekend: dance on Friday evening, children's theatre on Saturday afternoon, comedy on Saturday evening, classical music on Sunday morning and pop on Sunday afternoon. Entry is free; a voluntary contribution funds the programme. Arrive half an hour early to get a seat on the tiers.
De Parade, Milkshake and Dekmantel
At the end of July, three festivals set up in the parks. Not all 2027 dates were published in October 2026, so here are the 2026 editions, which show the usual period.
- De Parade, a travelling theatre festival under striped tents in the Martin Luther Kingpark, beside the Amstel: short shows of theatre, comedy, music and circus. 2026 edition: 24 July to 9 August.
- Milkshake, an open and queer electronic music festival in the Westerpark. 2026 edition: 25 and 26 July.
- Dekmantel, an electronic and experimental music festival over five days, with three days of open-air stages in the Amsterdamse Bos. 2026 edition: 29 July to 2 August; minimum age 18, tickets only from the official ticket shop.
The start of Pride, 31 July 2027
Pride Amsterdam runs from Saturday 31 July to Sunday 8 August 2027. On the first Saturday, the Pride Walk crosses the centre from 11 am to 3 pm and ends at the Pride Park in the Vondelpark, which offers music, art and shows from 12 pm to 10 pm. The Canal Parade takes place the following Saturday, 7 August: see our August guide and the Amsterdam Pride page.

Rows without a 2027 date show the usual period: check the final calendar in spring before booking. All the summer events are covered in our guide Amsterdam in summer: festivals, outdoors and swimming.
Cooling off: swimming and boats
Amsterdam has several official swimming spots whose water quality is monitored during the season: the Marineterrein inner harbour near the centre, Strand IJburg beach, the Nieuwe Meer, the Gaasperplas and the Sloterplas. Check the Zwemwater website or app before you go, since blue-green algae can trigger a warning. The canals and the Amstel are not official swimming waters. The North Sea, half an hour by train, is covered in our beaches near Amsterdam.
Renting a small electric boat is one of the month's most popular outings; city rules apply to renters, including a speed limit of 6 km/h on most canals. If you would rather leave the steering to someone else, read our guide to the canal cruise.
Practical tips for July
- Book early: museum tickets, restaurants and hotels, especially for late July.
- Plan for rain and cool evenings: a light jacket is enough.
- Avoid peak hours: queues at the Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum are shortest early in the morning.
- Cycling: the bike paths are packed in July; our guide to cycling in Amsterdam recalls the rules.
- Free: picnics, open-air theatre and the ferry to NDSM are among our free things to do in Amsterdam.
