Magna Plaza: the former post office turned shopping centre

Updated on October 26, 2026

Magna Plaza is a shopping centre in the former neo-Gothic post office at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 182, just behind the Royal Palace. Entry is free. The building is worth a visit for its great gallery hall and arcades even if you buy nothing. Since the pandemic several shops have closed: the visit is mostly architectural.

Highlights

The brick and stone building, with its turrets, looks like a small castle. It was built as a post office in the late 19th century.

The great hall

The central hall is ringed by arcaded galleries on several levels; this is where the shops and cafés are concentrated.
