Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam: modern and contemporary art, tickets and opening hours

Updated on October 1, 2026

The Stedelijk Museum is Amsterdam's museum of modern and contemporary art and design, on Museumplein next to the Van Gogh Museum. Its collection runs from the late 19th century to the present day, with works by Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, Gerrit Rietveld, Karel Appel, Willem de Kooning and Andy Warhol, as well as posters, furniture and design objects. The museum combines a brick building from 1895 with a white extension opened in 2012, which locals call "the bathtub". It is open every day from 10am to 6pm; an adult ticket costs €22.50 and entry is free for under-19s.

The "bathtub"

Designed by the Dutch firm Benthem Crouwel, the extension in white composite material seems to rest on glass walls beneath a wide, overhanging flat roof. It is now the museum's main entrance, on the Museumplein side, with the ticket desk, shop and restaurant on the ground floor.

The original building, designed by the architect Adriaan Willem Weissman in a neo-Renaissance style, houses the museum's historic galleries. From the street, its turreted brick façade contrasts sharply with the smooth white shell of the extension alongside.

The collection

The permanent display covers the 20th-century avant-garde, including a major group of works by Malevich, then De Stijl, the CoBrA movement, abstract expressionism and pop art, up to contemporary art. Design and graphic arts, from Rietveld chairs to posters, take up a large part of it.

Yayoi Kusama and Adam Pendleton

Until 17 January 2027, the museum devotes a major exhibition to the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, known for her polka dots, repeated patterns and immersive installations. From 10 October 2026 to 17 January 2027, "Some Wild Kind of Language" presents the painting of the American artist Adam Pendleton. The retrospective of the designer Kho Liang Ie ends on 18 October 2026.
