The GVB ferries behind Centraal Station cross the IJ free of charge to Amsterdam-Noord, for pedestrians and bikes. The Buiksloterweg line, the shortest (about 5 minutes), runs day and night; the IJplein and NDSM lines have their own, more limited evening hours, to be checked with GVB. It is the city's best budget trip, with a fine view of the water.
Highlights

The landing behind the station
The ferries leave from the back of Centraal Station, on the IJ side, so you go straight from the station to the boat.

Crossing the IJ
The Buiksloterweg line links the station to the Overhoeks district, with the A'DAM Tower and the EYE museum.

The other lines
The IJplein line serves eastern Noord, and the NDSM line leads to the former shipyard, a longer ride.
Practical info
Tips
- Bikes board free, which makes these ferries the best way to discover Noord. Look up evening hours on the GVB site before planning a late return: the last NDSM boat leaves before midnight according to sources. In Noord, see Amsterdam-Noord, the A'DAM Lookout, the EYE museum and NDSM. To sleep across the water, read hotels in Amsterdam-Noord.
How to get there
